Milintica, Huenya hold "reunion" ceremony
New statue at historic battle site commemorates reversal of Xiomeran conquest
Milintican and Huenyan officials today held a joint ceremony to dedicate a new monument at the site of the historic battle that marked the final conquest of Huenya by the Xiomeran Empire in 1387.
The "Reunited" monument was commissioned by the Milintican government and donated to Huenya. It stands on the seaside site of the ancient village of Milintica, from which the current nation of Milintica derives its name. The new statue replaces a monument that Xiomera had built in 1926 to commemorate Xiomera's victory at the Battle of Milintica. The previous Imperial monument was demolished with explosives on the orders of the Necatli regional government soon after Xiomeran forces withdrew.
The monument, which depicts two figures meeting in a swirl of water, represents the reuniting of the Milintican diaspora with its former homeland of Huenya, and the reuniting of the Milintican and Huenyan peoples, sculptor Patlee told DTNS. "While our ancient ancestors crossed an ocean to flee the Xiomeran conquest, they and their descendants remained a thread of the great tapestry of our heritage. Today, those threads are woven together once more," Patlee said at the dedication ceremony.
Representing the Huenyan government, the tlatoani of the Necatli, Huacue, called the dedication ceremony "the commemoration of the reversal of an ancient wrong, and the restoration of the ties between Huenyans and their Milintican brothers and sisters."
"Centuries ago, the forces of tyranny and conquest forced the ancestors of today's Milintican Huenyans - Necatli, Itotemoc, Tepiltzin, and even some Xiomerans - to flee their homeland. While they have built a new homeland for themselves in a new Milintica, they are still our kin and we celebrate the restoration of our ancient ties and their ability to once again set foot in a free Huenya, a land that is their second home by right," Huacue said.
Also attending the ceremony was Milintica's President Matōchmizalo, who called the event "the culmination of a dream of centuries for Milinticans."
"We love our homeland, Milintica, and will never forsake it. But our heritage is also Huenyan, and we celebrate the reversal of the ancient wrong done to our ancestors. We are truly honored to be able to return to the land of our ancestors again, and believe this will be the beginning of a truly close relationship between Milintica and Huenya," Matōchmizalo said.
While the event was labeled as a national celebration by Necatli regional officials, top Huenyan officials such as Cihuātlahtoāni Yauhmi and Vice-Speaker Tiacihitli were notably absent. Sources within the Huenyan government told DTNS, speaking on condition of anonymity, that a debate is raging within the Huenyan government between those who want to build a closer relationship with Milintica, and others who are concerned about the growing influence of that country's socialist government in world affairs. "There is no one in Huenya who wants to deny individual Milinticans the chance to reunite with their ancient Huenyan homeland. But there are many in the government who fear Milintica's leaders will use that to try to influence how our new government takes shape, just as they are trying to do in other countries," one official told DTNS.
